Diagnosing causal factors of change at the ecosystem level is challenging because multiple drivers often interact at various spatial and temporal scales. We employ an integrated natural and social science approach to assess potential mechanisms leading to the collapse of an estuarine social-ecological system, and recommend future paths to increased system resilience. Our case study is the collapse of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) fishery in Apalachicola Bay, Florida, USA, and the associated impacts on local resource dependent communities. The oyster fishery collapse is the most recent in a series of environmental stressors to this region, which have included hurricanes and tropical storms, drought, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We found...

The Fate of Coho Salmon Nomads: The Story of an Estuarine-Rearing Strategy Promoting Resilience Ecology and Society
Koski, K V.; The Nature Conservancy Alaska Field Office, Juneau, Alaska, USA; kkoski@tnc.org.
The downstream movement of coho salmon nomads (age 0), conventionally considered surplus fry, has been an accepted characteristic of juvenile coho salmon for the past 40 to 50 yr. The fate of these nomads, however, was not known and they were assumed to perish in the ocean. Several studies and observations have recently provided new insights into the fate of nomads and the role of the stream-estuary ecotone and estuary in developing this life history strategy that promotes coho resilience. Chinook and sockeye salmon have developed the ocean-type life-history strategy to exploit the higher productivity of the estuarine environment and migrate to the ocean at age 0. Nomad coho can acclimate to brackish water, and survive and grow well in the stream-estuary...

Sex differences on the feeding of the gobiid fish Bathygobius soporator in tide pools of Maiandeua Island, Pará, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Soares,Bruno E.; Lobato,Cleonice M. C.; Freitas,Danielly T. H.; Oliveira-Raiol,Roberta D.; Montag,Luciano F. A..
Abstract Bathygobius soporator (Valenciennes, 1837) is one of the most common fishes in tide pools in the estuary of Pará state, and has an omnivorous feeding habit. This study examined the diet of the species in Maiandeua Island, and aimed to: (i) describe the diet of B. soporator through indexes based on the occurrence and weight of consumed items; and (ii) evaluate if there is variation in diet composition between males and females. Frequency of Occurrence, frequency of weight and Alimentary Index were calculated for each item, and differences in the diet composition of males and females were observed through multivariate analyses (ANOSIM, NMDS and SIMPER). Bathygobius soporator presented carnivorous feeding habit, eating mainly crustaceans, and...

Abundance and species composition of planktonic Ciliophora from the wastewater discharge zone in the Bahía Blanca Estuary, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Barría de Cao,María Sonia; Pettigrosso,Rosa; Parodi,Elisa; Freije,Rubén.
The specific composition and abundance variation of the ciliate community from a wastewater discharge zone in the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina, were studied all throughout a year, from June 1995 to May 1996. The polluted area exhibited high values of particulate organic matter and nutrients, particularly phosphates. Aloricate ciliates were represented by 15 species belonging to the genera Strombidium Claparède & Lachmann, 1859; Strombidinopsis Kent, 1881; Cyrtostrombidium Lynn & Gilron, 1993; Strobilidium Schewiakoff, 1983; Lohmmanniella Leegaard, 1915 and Tontonia Fauré-Fremiet, 1914. Tintinnids were represented by nine species belonging to the genera Tintinnidium Kent, 1881, Tintinnopsis Stein, 1867 and Codonellopsis Jörgensen, 1924....

Hatching and larval export of the intertidal crab Neohelice granulata in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sánchez Vuichard,Guillermina; Farías,Nahuel; Luppi,Tomás.
Synchronization in the events of the reproductive cycle in female Neohelice granulata Dana, 1851 were studied from samples taken weekly and biweekly from September to December 2006 in the Laguna Mar Chiquita. The timing and larval hatching and synchronicity were inferred from numbers of ovigerous females and observing the stages of embryonic development. Synchronization in larval hatching also was observed in females in experiments in dark for a period of 48 hours, at three different salinities (10, 23 and 33 ppm). In addition plankton sampling were performed in order to study larval exportation at the field and its link to the tidal and light/dark cycles. We found that ovigerous females of N. granulata have a marked synchronization in embryonic...

Long-term changes on estuarine ciliates linked with modifications on wind patterns and water turbidity ArchiMer
López-abbate, M. Celeste; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Perillo, Gerardo M.e.; Barría De Cao, M. Sonia; Pettigrosso, Rosa E.; Guinder, Valeria A.; Uibrig, Roman; Berasategui, Anabela A.; Vitale, Alejandro; Marcovecchio, Jorge E.; Hoffmeyer, Mónica S..
Planktonic ciliates constitute a fundamental component among microzooplankton and play a prominent role in carbon transport at the base of marine food webs. How these organisms respond to shifting environmental regimes is unclear and constitutes a current challenge under global ocean changes. Here we examine a multiannual field survey covering 25 years in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina), a shallow, flood-plain system dominated by wind and tidal energy. We found that the estuary experienced marked changes in wind dominant regimes and an increase in water turbidity driven from the joint effect of persistent long-fetch winds and the indirect effect of the Southern Annular Mode. Along with these changes, we found that zooplankton components, i.e. ciliates...

Eutrophication disrupts summer trophic links in an estuarine microbial food web ArchiMer
López-abbate, M.c.; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Barría De Cao, M.s.; Silva, R.; Negri, R.; Guinder, V.a.; Hozbor, M.c.; Hoffmeyer, M.s..
Eutrophication is the most widespread effect of urban development in coastal areas. To elucidate how nutrient loading affects the carbon pathways at the base of food chains, we quantified the carbon transfer among microbial components, from prokaryotes to microzooplankton. For this purpose, we performed two size-fractionation feeding experiments during late summer under moderate (N: 28.5 μM, P: 0.92 μM, Si: 45.8 μM) and severe (N: 173.9 μM, P: 3.5 μM, Si: 67.2 μM) cultural eutrophication in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina). In both experiments, prokaryotes were largely dominated by heterotrophic forms, small diatoms dominated among autotrophs, and heterotrophic nanoflagellates were the most abundant among protistan grazers. Under severe eutrophication,...

Caracteristiques saisonnieres de l'hydrobiologie du complexe estuariende Marennes-Oleron (France). ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Berthome, Jean-paul; Garnier, J..
Four seasonal compaigns providing a sampling of 15 stations each followed during half a tide cycle, i.e. 120 water samples permit the definition of the main hydrobiological features of Marennes-Oleron Bay: salinity and turbidity, phytoplanktonic biomasses, ATP concentrations. The authors suggest that a new way of adapted sampling to their objectives, will work out in the future by sampling during tidal cycles but as frequently as possible.

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal...

The impact of groundwater discharges on mercury partitioning, speciation and bioavailability to mussels in a coastal zone (Reprinted from Marine Chemistry, vol 104, pg 143-155, 2007) ArchiMer
Laurier, Fabien; Cossa, Daniel; Beucher, Charlotte; Breviere, Emily.
The Mussel Watch program conducted along the French coasts for the last 20 years indicates that the highest mercury concentrations in the soft tissue of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) occur in animals from the eastern part of Seine Bay on the south coast of the English Channel, the "Pays de Caux". This region is characterized by the presence of intertidal and submarine groundwater discharges, and no particular mercury effluent has been reported in its vicinity. Two groundwater emergence systems in the karstic coastal zone of the Pays de Caux (Etretat and Yport with slow and fast water percolation pathways respectively) were seasonally sampled to study mercury distribution, partitioning and speciation in water. Samples were also collected in the...

Simultaneous use of strontium:calcium and barium:calcium ratios in otoliths as markers of habitat: Application to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour basin, South West France ArchiMer
Tabouret, Helene; Bareille, G.; Claverie, F.; Pecheyran, C.; Prouzet, Patrick; Donard, O. F. X..
Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in water from the Adour estuary show a clear relationship with the salinity of the surrounding water for salinities <20, while ratios are almost constant above this level of salinity. A Positive relationship was observed for the Sr:Ca ratio, whereas it was inverse for the Ba Ca ratio. These two elemental ratios were measured in the otoliths of the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L) using femtosecond laser ablation linked to an ICP-MS (fs-LA ICP-MS) There was a direct relationship between the elemental ratios recorded in eel otoliths and those found in water from fresh and marine areas, suggesting that Sr Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in eel otoliths can be used as markers of habitat in this estuary Continuous profiling allowed the...

Role des bacteries phototrophes anoxygeniques dans une partie stratifiee d'une lagune tropicale (Lagune Ebrie, Cote d'Ivoire) ArchiMer
Caumette, P.
In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well...

Traditional fishing using beach seines was studied over a period of one year at the mouth of the Onilahy river. The catches/efforts were recorded on a daily basis, biological sampling and the measurement of hydrological parameters being carried out twice a month. The moderate variations of salinity and temperature (14 < salinity < 35; 25 degrees C < temperature < 30 degrees C) which were observed in the estuary can be explained by the semiarid climate of the area. Four species of penaeid shrimps are to be found on the Onilahy: Metapenaeus monoceros, Panaeus indicus, Penaeus monodon and Penaeus japonicus, which were mainly caught at the subadult/adult stage with a Carapace length between 10 and 50 mm.
